| 502 | My information on his birthdate came from Sylvester Hall Reddin, who is a descendant of George Washington Pilgrim II. Information originally came was 5/10/1846 - from notes that Greg took when talking to Grandma Sylvester. I've changed the birthdate to reflect the date given to me by Aunt Martha Reddin Mooneyhan (2003). Personal information:"WASH was a bit of a rogue. After Nancy C. died he kind of went nuts. He left for a while, so the story goes, then he ended up married to Emma Petty. There was a child and it is not known whether he was the father, but he claimed to be although Van was born before they married. I talked to some gals in a Texas museum that knew a bit of the history of the Pilgrim family. They said George (Wash) sold off some of Emma's land, and was not nice to her at all. She brought a judgement against him. Also there was a divorce." Information provided by Dorothy Doyleen Poole Turner, Sept 2003. | *George Washington Pilgrim, Jr.

I have recorded here those lines which intermarry with the Jessee or related families. Source: a photograph, pedigree and descendants information for James Smith is posted under the Thompson Family of Russell Co., VA on www.rootsweb.com/~varussel/families/thompson/. Source: Mary Knight McGarr, Katy, TX [Icemom617@aol.com] posted on VARussel-L@Rootsweb.com the following, to which Michael Dye responds.I read with interest the "Recollections of George William Settle" and the references to the Smith family. I have my line back to James "Jeams" Smith (b. abt. 1784 in Kentucky and d. 1874 in Russell County, m. to Sarah Counts). My line is James "Jeams" Smith (m. Sarah Counts), James M. Smith (m. Sarah "Sallie" Artrip), Henry Clinton Smith (m. Rachel Elmira Cook), Stafford George Smith, Clarice Emma Smith Knight, Mary Knight McGarr. [Michael Dye's response]I'm not so sure about James Smith being from KY. That came from an interview with Mollie "Smith" Jessee in 1930, however, if you look at the 1850-70 census records, they indicate that James was from Russell Co. (on the 1850) and Virginia (on the 1860 & 70). I tend to think he may have come from one of the early Russell Co. Smith families. A search of the tax lists and deed records may give additional clues. So far I only have up through the 1802 tax list online. I would think he would be listed in the upper district where the Counts family is listed, but at that time he not yet listed. This would not be surprising as he would have only been abt 18 years old. I would expect him to show up about 1805. There are several Smith's in the upper district of the 1802 tax list. Two of those, Ely Smith & William Smith have two tithables in their households. It would be interesting to see if one of them had their number of tithables drop to one in the same year that James Smith first shows up. Source: LeeCole@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, December 26, 2001 9:26 PMI also am the GGGG-grandaughter of James Smith. His wife Sarah Smith age 63 was also born in Russell County, Virginia. I have also read the accounts by Elihu Jasper Sutherland in "John Counts of Gladehollow" and "Pioneer Recollections" which state that he was NOT related to the other Smith's from Russell County, Virginia and also indicated that he was from Kentucky.Unfortunately, I don't have much proof either way to help any of us...but just thought I'd mention the 1850 Russell County, Virginia census info. I'd also love to hear if any of you comes across any information to substatiate where he was from and who his parents were. | 619 | General Notes: James was the pioneer of the Smith family in Russell Co., VA. He came there when a young man in the early 1800s from KY, and settled in the Sink Hole area, north of Cleveland, VA. - The Musick Book by Egbert S. Musick, 1978. The names of his parents are unknown to his descendants. They lived in the Sink Holes Section of Russell Co., where it is said all their children were born. He was living there when the 1820 Census was taken, with a wife, four sons, and two daughters. Earliest existing records of Reeds Valley Baptist Church show both as members in 1823. The 1850 Russell Co. Census states he was 67 years of age and a native of that county; however, in 1930, a grandaughter, Mollie Jessee said that her grandfather, James "Jeams" Smith came to Russell Co. from KY; that she had heard he was from Scotland, and that she did not think any other branch of the Smith Family in Russell Co. was related to him. On 4-10-1854 James Smith executed four deeds to his sons and grandchildren for parts of his farm - 205 acres to James M. Smith; 146 acres to Joshua; 60 acres to William; and 151 acres to Ritison Smith, James Smith, Jasper Smith and Sarah Smith (children of his deceased son, Henry). His will was dated 01-12-1874 and probated 4-7-1874, therefore it iscertain he died between those dates. The 1860 Census shows his age as 76 and that James and Sarah "Sally" were in the household of his son, James M. Smith, who lived at the old homestead. In 1940, Martha Smith recalled that she had seen James Smith "a lot"; that he stayed with his son Jim at the old home in the Sink-Holes; "sometimes he would get mad and leave home and come over to Henry's and stay until his mad spell wore off, then go back to Jim's;" that she had seen him take his hoe and cane and go to the field and hoe corn and do other work; that he came to the home of Henry's widow in his last days and stayed until he got so weak they took him back home." He was about 90 years old at death. Both are buried in a field on their homeplace. - Some Descendants of John Counts of Glade Hollow by Elihu Jasper Sutherland.Robert & Samuel may not be sons of James & Sarah. See notes on Nancy Thompson. Source: Michael Dye [madye@fuse.net] posted, 3/21/2001, on VARussel-L@Rootsweb.com, this IMPORTANT NOTICE about the pedigree of James "Jeams" Smith. I asked Mike to look at the pedigree I have here recorded for James Smith. He responded as follows. I suspected I knew what I was going to see before I checked your sight and I was correct. I've seen where others have places James "Jeams" Smith as a son of John & Jane Smith [See RIN 331 John Smyth Esq.] In my opinion though, he was not their son. The first and biggest problem that has to be overcome is the mention in John Smith's will of his grandson, Solomon Smith, son of James Smith. The descendants of James Smith is fairly well documented and I have never seen a mention of a son named Solomon. Further, John Smith mentions several other granchildren in his will, which apparently were the ones that had been born at the time he wrote the will in Dec. 1825. By that time James "Jeams" Smith had 8 children. If he was in fact John Smith's son, then why would John mention a grandson named Solomon who there is no record of in James family, yet not mention any of James other children. They lived in Sink Holes section of Russell Co, where it is said alltheir children were born. Earliest records of Reeds Valley Baptist Church show both as members in 1823. | 630 | "It is with sadness we chronicle the death of William Smith, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of our county, which sad event occurred on the 17th day of April, 1910, at the home of his son, Tivis J. Smith, in Russell county, Virginia. The subject of this brief notice was born on the 4th of February, 1817, and lived to the advanced age of 93 years, 2 months and 23 days. He was the son of James Smith and was the last of quite a number of boys and girls all of whom preceded him to the great beyond. This family was widely known and highly esteemed by many who knew them best. About the year 1837 he was married to Matilda Kiser, who preceded him to the better land in August 1892 at the age of 71 years, hence they were permitted to live together about 55 years in which they toiled together for the good of their family, a blessing to the community in which they lived. To their union were born 13 children who grew up to call them blessed, seven of whom preceded their father to the spirit world, six remain to mourn their loss, namely Abel Smith, Tivis J. Smith, Elizabeth Combs, Mollie Jessee, Andrew Smith and P. Smith all of whom now live near the place of their nativity as honored and respected citizens of the county. I am informed brother Smith professed faith in Christ early in life and united with Reed's Valley (Ant. Mission or Old) Baptist church in which he lived a devoted member until about the year 1864 when he changed his church relations and united with the Sulphur Springs Missionary Baptist Church in which relation he remained until the day of his death. It can truly be said of Brother Smith that in all the relations of life he was a model man, one worthy of love and respect of all who knew him. As a citizen he had a warm place in the hearts of all who knew him on account of his honesty and integrity; as a husband he was ever kind and forbearing, ever laboring for the comfort and happiness of his companion, as a father he was faithful in all his domestic and religious duties, ruling his own household well, as a result and proof of which we find, most all of this children following in the path which their father trod. In his home the wayfaring man always found a welcome for he was fained for his kindness and hospitality. But it was as a christian that he was seen at his best. I speak from experience for in a long acquaintance of near forty-five years, I do not remember of ever having a conversation with him but what he had something to say about his hopes and fears and prospects for a better home where he would be united with his long gone friends. He was ever found in the house of God when circumstances would permit, an inspiration to his pastor and a blessing to his people, ever ready to speak a good word and work, hence his christian influence was vividly felt. But uncle Billy, as he was familiarly called is gone, we shall see his face no more in this world. While the world is poorer, heaven is richer by his going, and we hope some sweet day we will meet him again in the world where sickness, pain and sorrow will never come and where sad partings are not known. What shall I say to his children, grandchildren and his many relations and friends - only "Sorrow not as those who have no hope for Faith looks beyond." When what we now deplore, shall rise in full immortal prime, and bloom to fade no more; trust his Savior, imitate his virtue, walk in his footsteps, and meet him in heaven is the prayer of one who loves you all. Notes for Andris Souplis:There is some question as to whether Andris was married before he left France (and possibly widowed) and whether he was married 2 or 3 times in this country, one wife allegedly one Anneka or Anneckie Keyser around 1692. I have included only the two marriages for which there appears to b a preponderance of evidence. "On an old page in the Records Book of the Merion Meeting of the Society of Friends: Gwynedd, Plymouth and Upper Merion twps. Of Montgomery County, Pa. Is the following statement: 'The families of Suplee and Supplee of Blockley and Merion are descended from Andreas, or Andrew Souplis, a Huguenot who left France at the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He first came to the New Netherlands and was a Burgomaster in New Amsterdam. Andrew was a Colonel in the French Army and a native of Alsace-Lorraine. With 30 followers, he escaped toward Germany; all but seven were killed before reaching the frontier. Andris was born in 1634 and died in Philadelphia, 1726, age 92 and is buried at the Old Swedes Church, Wicaco.' (Old name for Gloria Dei, Philadelphia) "He was 48 years old when he left France and went to Mulheim, Germany where he met and married Gertrude (Goetra) Stressinger (born 1642). Several accounts say he had been married to a woman in France who may have been deceased by this time. He was born in 1634 of distinguished upper class parents and was a Huguenot, a member of the French Reformed Church and not the state church of France. At this time in history there was church and state unity in almost all Eurpean countries and to oppose the church was to oppose the government. Compulsory military service was required of every man. To serve in the army was to defend the state faith. To oppose the state faith was equal to being a heretic and the penalty for this was death." (Bertine 1988, v II 325, 328) "DENIZATION OF ANDRIS SOUPLIS 1685 The documentary evidence not cited in Pennypacker, The Settlement of Germantown, Phila., for the statement on page 133 that Andris Souplis of that town 'was admitted a burgher and denizen of the city of New York' was obviously this original item in the manuscript collections of the Historical Society of Penna.: Whereas Andries Suplie, being admitted a Burger of this Citty and haveing an Intent to Reside in these Parts, hath requested of mee that he may be a free Denizen of his Majestyes Colony, for an encouragement to Merchants and others who are willing to settle or traffique into these parts, KNOW YE that by virtue of the Commission and Authority unto mee given I doe declare and confirm him the said Andries Suplie to be a free Denizen of this Colony, and doe further hereby strictly order & enjoyn the said Andries Suplie (to) be in all things and matters so held treated reputed and esteemed, he having by virtue of These Letters of Denization priviledg and power to purchase receive and take, have, hould, buy, occupy, possess, and enjoy, any lands, tenemts. and hereditaments within this Government, and them may give, sell, alyen, and bequeath as he shall see cause, and the said Andries Suplie hath likewise liberty and freedome to trade or traffique in this place or in any other of his Majestyes Dominions and Plantacons as other his Majestyes good subjects may lawfully do, without any matter of lett, hindrance or molestacon whatsoever. (Signed) Tho: Dongan (Lieut. Governor & Vice-Admirall of New York and its dependencies.)" (The Pennsylvania Genealogical magazine, Volume xviii, December 1950, page 78) "From the corporate records of the German Township (Germantown, PA) it seems that he arrived sometime between 1683, when the first settlers came (he was not in this first group) and 1691 when he appears in official records as the first Sheriff of Philadelphia. There is as original agreement for the lease of 50 acres from William Strepers to Andres Souplis dated June 12, 1686. Yearly rent was the equivalent of $3." [Germantown Historical Society] "Records and maps from 1689 show Souplis owning a 50 acre lot and an additional side lot; the next recorded owner or this land is Christian Warmer in 1714. Also in 1689, Strepers owns a different 50 acre lot with a wide side piece; this may have been the property Souplis rented. The Souplis lot, number 18, is located on the east side of Germantown Avenue about where Walnut Lane is today, the Strepers lot, number 20, is located on the east side of Germantown Avenue about where Tulpehocken St. is today. In between there is one lot; each lot is about a city block wide." (Germantown Historical Society) On May 7, 1691 Andreas Souplis along with 61 others was naturalized by Thomas Lloyd, Deputy Governor of PA. [many sources} "On October 6, 1691 the first court of record was held at Germantown, in the public meeting house, (of Friends,) before Francis Daniel Pastorius, bailiff, Jacob Tellner, Dirk Isaacs op den Graef, and Herman Isaacs, the three eldest burgesses. Isaac Jacobs van Bebber, recorder; Paul Wolf, clerk; Andrew Souplis, sheriff; Jan Lucken, constable. Proclamation being made by Andrew Souplis, the charter was read, and the officers attested. Caspar Carsten and his wife, who were bound over to this court for menacing the constable, when about to serve a warrant upon them, were called, and, submitting to the bench, were fined two pounds, ten shillings. The court adjourned until the 17th of November next."[Watson 1905, 'Annals of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania in the Olden Time', Vol II, p29] Will of "Souplis, Andrew, Kingsessing township, County of Philadelphia, a weaver, was sighned March 25 1724/25 and proved March 20, 1726, recorded page 26. More About Andris Souplis: Immigration: October 17, 1684, came to America Souplis, Andris B: 1634, France D: M: Gertrude Stressinger, b. 1642, Germany FN: Unknown MN: Unknown The pioneer of the Suplee family in America was Andris Souplis, a Frenchman, born in France, in the year 1634, a man of distinguished parentage, a soldier, an officer in the French army, and also a Huguenot. He left France in 1682. France at that time was a monarchical government, and the established religion was Roman Catholic. The Huguenots, on account oftheir religious belief, were persecuted by the Roman Catholics under the reign of Louis XIV, who was then King of France. These persecutions became intolerable, and tens of thousands of Huguenots left France to seek homes in foreign lands. Amongst them was Andris Souplis, who left France in 1682 and went to Germany. He was virtually a refugee, fleeing from persecution. Whilst in Germany he married a German lady, Gertrude Stressinger, who was born in Germany in 1642. They left Germany in 1683, and with a party of German emigrants came to America, arriving in Philadelphia in the early part of 1684. History informs us that Andris Souplis was a man of great intelligence and ability, and was held in high esteem by William Penn, who was then residing in Philadelphia, and was governor of the province of Pennsylvania at that time. Andris Souplis was sheriff of Philadelphia county in 1691. With his wife he settled in Germantown. [NOTE: There may have been an earlier marriage and the older two children may have been from the first one.] Andris Souplis, in his will dated March 25th, 1724, stated that he was aged, but of sound mind and good health. He also states that he was then living upon his plantation in Kingsessing township, Philadelphia County, in the province of Pennsylvania. He died in the early part of the year 1726, aged ninety-two years. His wife survived him, but no record has been found of the time of her death. Children of Andris Souplis and Gertrude Stressinger: Bartholomew Souplis (eldest son) B: D: M: Their eldest son Bartholomew settled upon a farm in Blockley township, which territory is now within the city limits of Philadelphia. His dwelling house stood whereon the Cathedral cemetery is now located in West Philadelphia. The remainder of the farm is now covered with streets and buildings. Upon this farm was erected a grist and saw mill. The ground whereon the Blockley Baptist church now stands was a portion of this farm, and was donated by John Suplee. The family started teasing him by calling him Phillip, and the name stuck to him. On all documents and gravestone the name Phillip was used. Phillip wore a hearing aid, and was unable to sign his name; he made an X on his marriage certificate, then the clerk wrote his name for him. | Nathan Andrew "Phillip" Stiles

| 713 | They lived up the Clinch River from where Catherine and her children got land as a War of 1812 widow--at Carbo, VA. We now maintain the Cemetery where her property was--it went to James as he stayed with her and took care of her. She lived longer than his wife Dicie and helped him raise his younger kids. James and Dicie have a stone but Catherine doesn't but I know she is buried there. Also, her dau Sarah has no stone. She was the mother of John Wesley La Force. never married The youngest son Aaron La Force sold the property to the Clinchfield Coal Co and it is now a coal car siding and sludge pit from where they wash coal. If you type in Carbo, Va on the US Tiger Map website you can see where it was. Near where the county road 615 is--just further to the east. SUTHERLAND, HENRY (1820 U.S. Census) Virginia , RUSSELL, NO TWP LISTED, Series: M33 Roll: 141 Page: 163 Henry Sutherland, son of James & Sarah "Sally" (Buchanan) Sutherland died during the winter following General W H Harrison's election at the home of his daughter, Mary "Pop" Artrip and was buried in the Artrip Graveyard at Clinchfield on Dumps Creek, near where the county road 615 is--just further to the east. Agnes lived longer than Henry, she became a cripple and lived among her children. They lived up the Clinch River from where Catherine and her children got land as a War of 1812 widow--at Carbo, VA. We now maintain the Cemetery where her property was--it went to James (LaForce) as he stayed with her (Catherine) and took care of her. She lived longer than his (Jame’s) wife Dicie (Kiser) and helped him raise his younger kids. James and Dicie have a stone but Catherine doesn't but I know she is buried there. Also, her dau Sarah has no stone. She was the mother of John Wesley La Force. Never married. Aaron La Force sold the property to the Clinchfield Coal Co and it is now a coal car siding and sludge pit from where they wash coal. The Clinchfield Coal Company moved the remains of Henry, Agnes and 6 others (probably Mary “Pop” Sutherland Artrip) to the Elijah Sutherland cemetery where they are now located (in an unmarked grave) within the cemetery. The exact spot is known. The move occurred around 1967. Clinchfield Coal obtained permission of Overton Sutherland, owner of property in which the closest family cemetery existed (Elijah Sutherland Cemetery) The digging up of the remains was approved by the state of Virginia, and transferred with a police escort. Tthe exact location of Henry and Aggies remains in the Elijah Sutherland Cemetery where they were re-buried is now known and was supervised by cemetery caretaker CB Parrott. He remembered the re-interment and that it is a mass grave with only remains (no coffins) delivered (I assume buried together in a vault, not just thrown in the ground). Note: A search should be conducted to obtain the deeds for the exact locations of the Henry and Mary "Pop" Atrip farms.
